BANNER ELK, N.C. – For the fourth time in as many years, the Lees-McRae College men's basketball team won on Senior Day as it knocked off conference rival Barton Saturday, 91-85. The victory is Lees-McRae's eighth of the season as it improves its record to 8-16 on the season and 7-9 in league action.
Neither team was able to build much of a lead in the opening nine minutes Saturday. The Bobcats began to open things up via the three-pointer as they drilled nine shots beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes. Jordan Turner notched four of these by himself and led the team with 14 points at the half. Additionally, seniors Chad Hicks and Darius Malbon connected on a pair of threes as well to add to that total. With the sharp-shooting from long distance, the Bobcats were able to build up a 52-38 lead on the Bulldogs going to the half.
Despite being down by 14 points after the opening 20 minutes, Barton came storming back in the second half eventually tying the score at 65-65 with 10:50 to go in regulation. LMC changed its game plan a bit once the score was tied and took the ball to the basket more in an effort to draw fouls. In total, the Bobcats got to the free throw line 13 times in the final 10 minutes of the game and made 10 of them. The solid effort from the charity stripe was enough for LMC to hold on for the 91-85 victory.
Turner led all Bobcat scorers with 24 points Saturday, which fourth 20+ point effort in the past five games. Hicks finished with 14 points and six rebounds, while juniors Lepreece Lynch and Avery Wallis chipped in 11 and 10 points.
The Bobcats will play their final home game of the season Wednesday when it hosts King (TN) University at Williams Gymnasium. The start time for that contest is set for 7:30 p.m.
