BANNER ELK, N.C. – Powered by 15 kills by freshman Wes Rogman, the Lees-McRae College men's volleyball team began its 2017 season with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-17) victory over Lincoln Memorial Friday evening at Williams Gymnasium. It marked the first time that the Bobcats have won their season opener since the 2013 season.
Lees-McRae came out swinging in the opening set as it hit .455 as a team in 22 attempts. Rogman notched five kills in the frame and John Sobel chipped in three more. Rogman and Sobel were not the only Bobcats to tally kills in the opening set as six different LMC players had at least one. With the varied offense, the Railsplitters could not keep up with Lees-McRae as it went on to win the first set, 25-18.
After cruising the majority of the first set, the Bobcats had to battle in the second. Lincoln Memorial scored 11 of the first 17 points in the second to open an 11-6 lead early on. LMC, however, promptly went on a 4-0 run to get within one (11-10) before gaining the lead for good at the 15-14 mark. Lees-McRae went on to take the second set, 25-22.
The duo of Rogman and Sobel proved too much for Lincoln Memorial in third set. The two outside hitters combined for 11 kills on 18 attempts with just three attack errors. That tandem proved to be the difference as Lees-McRae went on to finish off its first 3-0 victory since the 2015 season, 25-17.
The Bobcats will look to win another match at Williams Gymnasium Saturday when they play host to Charleston (W.V.). First serve is set for noon.
