Philippi, W. Va. – Senior John Sobel totaled 19 kills on 26 attempts with just two attack errors (.654 hitting percentage) to help the Lees-McRae College men's volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-23) sweep over Alderson Broaddus Friday evening. The victory improves LMC's record to 2-1 on the season, which surpasses its win total from last season.
Lees-McRae scored the first three points to open the match and never looked back as it went on to win the first frame, 25-19. LMC's offense was firing on all cylinders as it hit .458 as a team. Reto Pfund dished out 10 assists in the first. Receiving most of Pfund's sets in the stanza were the trio of Hector Serviat, Wes Rogman and Sobel. Those three Bobcats combined for 12 kills on 18 attempts with no attack errors (.667 hitting percentage). Sobel led these efforts with six kills.
LMC rallied from a four-point deficit to not only take the lead, but also win the second set by a final score of 25-23. Sobel added five more kills in the second, while fellow senior Mark Shayka chipped in four kills to help the Bobcats complete the comeback. In addition to the work by Sobel offensively, LMC also stepped up defensively totaling five blocks in the second.
Much like the second set, the Bobcats had to rally from a few points down for most of the frame. Sobel put an exclamation point on his already stellar performance with eight more kills in the third set to help Lees-McRae finish off the sweep of the Battlers, 25-23.
On top of the 19-kill performance by Sobel, there were also several other standout performances by the Bobcats Friday. Pfund finished with 34 assists, while Kennan Freitas finished with a team-high 11 digs and Rogman added four blocks.
LMC will look to create a winning streak Saturday when it travels to Charleston (W.V.). First serve is set for 2 p.m.
