BANNER ELK, N.C. – Seniors Mark Shayka and John Sobel combined for 28 kills on 47 attempts to pace the Lees-McRae College men's volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-23) victory over North Greenville Saturday night at Williams Gymnasium. The victory snaps a three-match losing skid for the Bobcats as they improve to 5-9 overall and 3-6 in conference play.
Set 1: The two teams traded points for most the first set. LMC would, however, take the lead for good following a kill by Shayka to make it 13-12 Bobcats. NGU never got closer in the frame as Lees-McRae went on to win the first set by six, 25-19.
Set 2: In the second set, the Bobcats continued to move the ball well offensively hitting .368 in the frame on 19 attempts. LMC had five different players notch at least one kill in the stanza. The efficiency of the Bobcats' offense proved too much for North Greenville as LMC extended its lead to 2-0 with a 25-16 set win.
Set 3: North Greenville and Lees-McRae played their most competitive frame for what turned out to be the final set. Both teams had leads in the stanza, but it seemed like whenever one team went ahead the other quickly answered. The score was tied at 13 different points throughout the third with the final time occurring at 23-23. LMC ended up taking the next two points thanks to miscues by the Crusaders to finish of Saturday's match, 25-23.
Statistical Leaders: Sobel led LMC with 15 kills on 24 attempts Saturday to go along with a team-high three service aces. Shayka, meanwhile, posted a season-high 13 kills on 23 attempts with just three attack errors for a .435 hitting percentage. Setting up both Sobel and Shayka most of the time was Reto Pfund who totaled 37 assists in the contest (12.33 per set).
Next Up: Lees-McRae will return to action Wednesday at King (TN) University. The Tornado knocked off LMC 3-1 when the two teams matched up earlier this season in Banner Elk. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. from Bristol, Tenn.
