BANNER ELK, N.C. – Senior John Sobel powered the Lees-McRae College men's volleyball team to a thrilling 3-2 (26-28, 23-25, 25-18, 25-21, 15-11) comeback victory over Emmanuel (GA) College Saturday afternoon at Banner Elk Elementary. The victory, which is the team's fourth in a row, improves LMC's record to 9-13 overall and 7-7 in conference play.
Set 1: The opening set Saturday was a tightly contested one as it was the lone frame that went to extra points. The score was knotted at 26-26 before the Lions notched back-to-back points to finish off the set victory. Sobel led LMC with six kills in the stanza.
Set 2: Emmanuel was able to win its second straight set to begin Saturday's match thanks to stellar work from the service line. The Lions notched a match-high five aces in the second compared to three from LMC. Those two points proved to be the difference as EC went on to win the frame, 25-23.
Set 3: The Bobcats battled back from an early four-point deficit to tie the score at two different points in the third frame. With their backs up against the wall, the Bobcats rattled off six consecutive points to stay alive in the match, 25-19.
Set 4: In the fourth frame, neither team had issues scoring points offensively. Both squads hit .357 or higher. Sparked by seven kills by Sobel in the fourth, the Bobcats were able to sneak out the 25-21 victory over the Lions to force a fifth set.
Set 5: After building up momentum in the prior two frames, the Bobcats rode that to finish off their second five-set win of the season as they won the fifth frame, 15-11. LMC took the lead for good at 5-4, and Sobel finished it off with his 19th kill of the contest to close out the match.
Next Up: The Bobcats will look to keep this type of play rolling next week when they travel to Barton next Friday. The Bulldogs got the better of LMC earlier this season in Banner Elk, 3-0. First serve for Friday's match is set for 7 p.m.
