TIGERVILLE, S.C. – Five different members of the Lees-McRae College men's volleyball team had at least six kills to help lead the Bobcats to a 3-0 sweep (26-24, 25-23, 25-21) of North Greenville Saturday afternoon in Tigerville, S.C. The win improves LMC's record to 10-15 overall and 8-9 in conference action.
Set 1: Paced by five kills from both John Sobel and Wes Rogman, the Bobcats went on to edge the Crusaders in the first set, 26-24. In addition to the play of Sobel and Rogman, a key in LMC taking the first frame was its work defensively as it held NGU to a .125 hitting percentage on 25 attempts in the first set.
Set 2: Unlike the first set, the Bobcats had to battle back from an early deficit to overcome North Greenville. NGU held the lead for most of the second stanza as it led LMC as late as 23-20. However, Lees-McRae went on a 5-0 run to close out the frame and extend its lead to 2-0 over the Crusaders, 25-23.
Set 3: LMC continued to ride the momentum it gained in the second set in what proved to be the final set Saturday. The Bobcats scored seven of the first eight points in the frame on their way to 25-21 win over the Crusaders. A key in the frame was LMC's ability on the serve as it totaled four aces in the third. Senior Mark Shayka paced these efforts with three aces by himself.
Next Up: The Bobcats will close out their regular season Tuesday when they visit Limestone in another Conference Carolinas matchup. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in Gaffney, S.C.
