DUE WEST, S.C. – The Lees-McRae College softball team dropped a pair of close games to Erskine College Saturday afternoon by scores of 4-3 in nine innings and 3-1. The losses drop LMC's record to 8-20 this season and 0-4 in conference action.
Game 1: LMC's Kara Cunningham and Erskine's Danica Newton kept the opposing lineups in check in the first seven innings of game one. Neither team scored a run in those frame, which led to a rare extra inning contest with no score.
Once the game went into extra innings, however, both offenses started to find their respective grooves. Lees-McRae scored a run on a sacrifice in the top of the eighth, but Erskine answered with a run of their own in the bottom half. The Bobcats came right back in the ninth to score a pair of runs but the Flying Fleet came back with three runs in their half to finish off the 4-3 victory.
Cunningham took the loss in the circle for Lees-McRae dropping her record to 4-6. The sophomore hurler allowed four runs (two earned) on three hits in eight-and-two-third innings in the contest.
Game 2: Sarah Tucker connected for her first home run of the season in game two, but it was not enough as the Flying Fleet completed the sweep of the Bobcats Saturday, 3-1.
Lees-McRae had plenty of opportunities to put runs on the board in game two after notching 10 hits and stealing three bases. Despite these efforts, LMC had a total of 10 runners left on base in the game. In addition to the home run by Tucker, Cunningham, Merriam and Noel Cassidy put together solid efforts at the plate with each of them totaling two hits.
Charlie Dutton took the loss for the Bobcats despite allowing just two hits in six innings of work. Dutton, who was hurt by five walks and two hit batters Saturday, saw her record dip to 0-7 with the defeat.
Next Up: LMC will head to Emmanuel (GA) College Sunday for another Conference Carolinas doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
