WILSON, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College softball team split a pair of games on the road Sunday at Barton. LMC shutout the Bulldogs 6-0 in the first contest, but Barton rebounded to blank the Bobcats in game two by an 8-0 score in six innings.
Game 1 Recap: Sophomore Kara Cunningham notched her first career shutout in the first game of the day to help the Bobcats blank the Bulldogs, 6-0. Cunningham struck out nine Barton hitters and allowed just three hits in the contest on her way to sealing her seventh win of the season.
In addition to her work in the circle, Cunningham also was a force offensively as she went 2-for-4 with a run scored and knocked in another run. Noel Cassidy, Emily Merriam and Kirsten Doss also had two-hit days at the plate to help support Cunningham. Doss led the team with two RBI in the victory and added a triple as well.
Game 2 Recap: Barton used a six-run fourth inning to overcome the Bobcats in game two, 8-0, in six innings. BC's starting pitcher Hannah Jones kept LMC's offense in check holding the Bobcats to just two hits in the tilt. Cassidy and Caitlyn Ray accounted for the two hits for Lees-McRae in game two.
Gabrielle Moyer started the game for LMC and was tagged with the loss after allowing one run on two hits in one third of an inning. The loss moves Moyer's record to 3-3. Most of Barton's damage in game two came thanks to fielding miscues by LMC. In total, six of Barton's eight runs were unearned.
Next Up: The Bobcats will close out their 2017 regular season with a pair of doubleheaders at home. The first twin bill will occur Tuesday when LMC hosts King (TN) University. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
