BRISTOL, Tenn. --- Freshman Ellissa Small produced a career-high 15 kills and junior Madison Martin led the defense with 21 digs, but the Lees-McRae women's volleyball team fell short in a tight battle with rival King (Tenn.), 25-23, 22-25, 27-25, 21-25, 13-15, in a Conference Carolinas bout Tuesday evening at the Student Center in Bristol, Tenn.
The Tornado (5-6, 5-0 CC) remain perfect in conference play after four players had double digit kills, led by Cathy Scaniffe with 18. The Bobcats (5-8, 2-2) had four players with double digit digs despite dropping their second consecutive five-set conference affair.
Small (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) notched a double-double when she combined 15 kills with 14 digs.
LMC led by five, 24-19, in the first set following an ace from Parsons.
King (Tenn.) rallied back to cut the deficit to one, but Madigan Gonzales (Ruidoso, N.M.) ended the set with a kill.
The Tornado overcame a two-point disadvantage, 22-20, and rode strong play from Haley Roe to rip off five consecutive points to win the set.
The Bobcats staved off set point and used a 3-0 run to win the third when Haylee Leonard (Wallburg, N.C.) delivered a block assist and a kill.
The home squad used a 4-0 run late in the fourth to take control of the set before using a Scaniffe kill to knot it at two sets apiece.
The fifth set was entertaining while the teams see-sawed for momentum. The Tornado took advantage of a pair of LMC attack errors to claim the victory.
Freshman Logan Slusher (Hayes, Va.) turned in a dozen kills while Gonzales finished with 11.
The Bobcats return home to host Southern Wesleyan, Thursday, Sep. 29 at 7 p.m. in a Green Out Match in Williams Gymnasium.
