BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College softball team will have a busy schedule over the next few days with three doubleheaders against South Atlantic Conference (SAC) institutions. The Bobcats will head to No. 8 Lincoln Memorial on Thursday before heading to Wingate on Saturday and UVa-Wise on Sunday. First pitch on all three days is set for 1 p.m.
Last Time Out – After several schedule changes in the first couple weeks of February, the Bobcats finally took the field for the first time in game action last Saturday at Catawba. Lees-McRae came away with a pair of victories over the Indians winning 2-1 in game one and 6-5 in game two. It marks the first time Lees-McRae has started 2-0 since 2012.
On the Road Again – Lees-McRae will look to continue its momentum from last Saturday's sweep of Catawba into this week's action. Lees-McRae will have to do so away from home not only this week but until mid-March when it opens its home schedule. In 2019, 15 of Lees-McRae's 22 victories came in games away from home.
Five more K's – With just five more strikeouts, junior pitcher Cassidy Largen will become just the tenth pitcher in program history to strike out over 100 hitters in a Bobcat uniform. Largen struck out five hitters in her first outing of the season at Catawba on Saturday in a complete game victory.
About the Opponents – Lincoln Memorial enters Thursday's twin bill with the Bobcats ranked eighth in the national polls. LMU has won nine of its 10 games this far with all 10 contests being played at home. One strength of the Railsplitters so far in 2020 has been their ability to run the bases and get on base. As a team, Lincoln Memorial has stolen 14 bases in 16 attempts to go along with a .430 on-base percentage.
Wingate has started its 2020 campaign with a 4-6 record. The Bulldogs do own a perfect 4-0 mark on their home field. Two of those victories came in its last time out defeating Barton twice by scores of 16-0 and 23-1. As those scores would show, the Bulldog offense is strong with a .355 team batting average. The pitching staff has also had a strong start to the season with a 1.24 ERA and a .203 batting average against.
Finally, UVa-Wise has played eight games so far this spring and has won five of them. The Cavaliers have an offense with some power with eight home runs in eight games. Overall, five different Cavaliers have hit long balls this season. On the pitching side, UVa-Wise is led by McKenna Falwell who is 2-1 with a 1.40 ERA in 20 innings pitched.
Series Rewind vs. Opponents – Lees-McRae and Lincoln Memorial matched up last season in Banner Elk. The Railsplitters came away with two wins winning 7-6 and 6-3 over the Bobcats. As for Wingate and UVa-Wise, the Bobcats have seen them since the 2017 season. Lees-McRae is 0-2 all-time against Wingate and 4-7 against UVa-Wise.
